Miklós Zrínyi (1508-1566), the heroic captain of Szigetvár Castle in Hungary, bravely defended against 50,000 Turks led by Sultan Suleiman for 34 days from August 5 to September 7, 1566, with his 2,500 soldiers, even after the walls were brought down to the ground by the end of the siege. Zrínyi sacrificed his life by leading his remaining small group of soldiers out of the burning, now indefensible inner castle.

Eventually, due to the hopeless situation, he surrendered the now indefensible castle in exchange for free withdrawal.
